The drum is the central rhythm instrument in nearly all cultures and is characterised above all by the simplicity of its construction and the various possibilities for interaction. The aim of this work was to transfer these qualities to digital percussion instruments. The key element of every drum is the batter head. The concept of DP5 is based on the use of a smart fabric as a batter head. It makes it possible to use this as a capacitive multitouch surface. One can use one hand to modulate sounds and effects while playing. Furthermore, the transparency of the fabric allows an underlying display to divide the instrument into different areas and to visualise the modulations.
